چکیده

In this paper, FTIR spectroscopy using attenuated total reflection (ATR) and KBr pressed disk techniques has been used to characterize sorbed water and HDTMA+ in organo-clay. Sorbed water content decreases with the intercalation of HDTMA+. With the decrease of the sorbed water content, the position of the nu2 mode shifts to higher frequency dramatically while the stretching vibration shifts to lower frequency slightly, indicating that H2O is less strongly hydrogen bonded. This might be resulted from the polarization of H2O molecules by the changeable cations and HDTMA+. FTIR spectra show that both antisymmetric and symmetric CH2 stretching absorption bands shift to low frequencies with increase of amine concentration within the galleries of montmorillonite, elucidating the increase of ordered conformation. Furthermore, the present study demonstrates that the antisymmetric CH2 stretching mode is more sensitive to the conformational ordering than the symmetric stretching mode. When KBr pressed disk technique used, two well resolved absorption bands at 730 and 720 cm(-1), and at 1473 and 1463 cm(-1), corresponding to the methylene scissoring and rocking modes, respectively, could be observed in FTIR spectra of organo-clays with relative higher concentration of surfactant. However, the FTIR spectra using ATR technique only display singlets and they are independent of amine concentration and chain conformation. Our present study demonstrates that FTIR spectroscopy using KBr pressed disk technique is more suitable to probe the conformational ordering of surfactant in organo-clays than that suing ATR technique does.

Antibacterial activity of materials synthesized from clay minerals

The antibacterial activity of silver and cationic surfactant modified smectites from North Patagonian, Argentina, were tested in growth inhibition of Escherichia coli bacteria by the test of susceptibility on solid medium. The exchange reactions were carried out using Ag and hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) cations in larger amounts than those conventionally required to form monolayer on the ...

Aflatoxin Toxicity Reduction in Feed by Enhanced Binding to Surface-Modified Clay Additives

Animal feeding studies have demonstrated that clay additives, such as bentonites, can bind aflatoxins in ingested feed and reduce or eliminate the toxicity. Bentonite deposits are found throughout the world and mostly consist of expandable smectite minerals, such as montmorillonite. The surfaces of smectite minerals can be treated with organic compounds to create surface-modified clays that mor...

Modes of tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrinatomanganese(III) ion intercalation inside natural clays

BACKGROUND Metalloporphyrin ions, with planar shape, have been known to intercalate horizontally and diagonally between montmorillonite layers. Perpendicular intercalation inside montmorillonite has not been reported earlier. This work aims at achieving perpendicular intercalation inside montmorillonite in natural clays. Possible intercalation inside other forms of natural clay will also be inv...

Removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions using modified clay

Introduction: Discharging of industrial colored wastewaters especially into aqueous environments can cause adverse effects on aquatic life due to their toxic natures. In this study, montmorillonite modified by hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (HDTMA-Mt) was used for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB). Materials and Methods: The influence of surfactant loading rate, contact time, pH, adso...

InterCalatIOn Of methylene blue IntO mOntmOrIllOnIte at dIfferent COndItIOnS: an apprOaCh fOr preparIng Clay-baSed nanOpIgmentS

Intercalation products based on ionic exchange reaction between cationic dye methylene blue and Na-montmorillonite were prepared. Montmorillonite particles intercalated with methylene blue were characterized using X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, elemental and thermo-gravimetric analysis. The results showed that intercalation of dye molecules within the interlayer spaces of montmorillo...
